By January 1 we expect East Coast Greenway signs will have been installed on the full length of the M-Path, from SW 11th Street to Metrorail’s Dadeland South Station. This is a major milestone in Green Mobility Network’s support and advocacy for both the M-Path and the 2,900-mile bike route between Key West and northern Maine.

A land developer has pledged that any development on the lot at 401-405 LeJeune Road will not encroach upon the M-Path!

At the May 27 meeting of BPAC, the developer rolled out proposals to build a bank with a drive-through on the lot, which would have placed the flow of traffic directly onto the M-Path. GMN was there to represent the thousands of bicyclists and pedestrians to demonstrate their opposition, with BPAC members making it clear that safety is a priority and that any encroachment upon the M-Path was unacceptable. Representatives of Green Mobility Network, Friends of the Greenlink, Bike/Walk Coral Gables, Run Club Network, and Bike SoMi voiced their opposition and reiterated that the community will fight any further intrusion upon the M-Path.
The battle is not over yet, though! The developer will be re-appearing before BPAC in a month’s time. Although he has pledged to not encroach upon the M-Path, we have to stay vigilant and ensure that our safety is protected. The M-Path is a 10.5-mile shared-use path that stretches from Downtown Miami to Dadeland South, and one of South Florida’s best bicycle and pedestrian amenities. It crosses 28 major roadways and runs through Brickell, Vizcaya, Douglas Road, UM and other key landmarks. However, it is in danger of being undermined.
A developer is seeking to build a parking lot, drive-through, and associated back-of-house functions at the corner of U.S.1 and LeJeune Road. This development would encroach upon the M-Path, making transportation more difficult for commuters, students, and all of us who use the path at this busy juncture. More importantly, it would put lives at risk: MPO data shows us that this sort of encroachment leads to more injuries and deaths for pedestrians and cyclists.
We need to do everything we can to protect ourselves by stopping this development or making sure that it involves a fair solution for pedestrians and cyclists. MDT will be holding a presentation on this proposed development at the BPAC meeting on Tuesday, May 27th at Government Center at 5:30 (check out our calendar for details). We urge you to attend the meeting and stand up for our interests!
