On Thursday August 27 from 9:30 a.m. until 12 noon, the Coral Gables City Commission will meet for a Miracle Mile/Giralda Streetscape Design Workshop. The meeting will be held in the City if Coral Gables Commission Chambers. City staff and commissioners will discuss progress on the project and review design elements. Public hearings will be scheduled later.
The city has been wrestling with the idea of adding bike lanes and additional bike parking to the iconic Miracle Mile strip. There is one side who believe that Coral Gables must further embrace improved bicycle infrastructure along the Mile, while others prefer to keep the street intact. Green Mobility Network believes that improved bicycle infrastructure will keep riders safe and stimulate local economic development. Cities across the country are realizing that young professionals are moving to destinations that support efficient and connected bicycle, pedestrian, and transit infrastructure.
Coincidentally, for those who think that Miami Beach bike riders don’t cross over into the mainland, check out this photo recently taken in downtown Coral Gables. The cruiser-style bikes are provided to Ritz-Carlton Hotel guests in South Beach, and apparently, the two cities weren’t too far apart for this couple to explore. We don’t know who these riders are, but much respect to them for showing us all that it is indeed possible to travel across this town with out a car!
Please attend tomorrow’s workshop and show your support for improved bike infrastructure in Coral Gables.
